Chapter 22 - Mama's Boy
•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•
1 Hour Later
Aiden felt like there was barely anyone around him that he could trust, no one other than Julian. And aside from him there was only his mother, someone that's yet to do him wrong in any way, shape, or form. And despite the fact that Aiden had always chased after and secretly wanted Thomas' approval, he knew at heart that he was a mama's boy.
"What are you thinking about?" Julian spoke softly as he looked over at Aiden who seemed to be completely zoned out.
"I just don't want to run into Thomas.
I don't know how I'll react, seeing him again in person," Aiden answered, staring out the window of the car. "My mother isn't answering her phone, so I don't know if he's there with her or not."
"Well, I'll be there with you." Julian grabbed Aiden's hand and squeezed it; Aiden finally turned to look at him, smiling faintly. "If your father is in there, we'll handle it. We'll get through it, together."
"Yes, together." Aiden took a deep breath in and then exhaled as he placed his other hand on the door handle. "Okay. Let's do this."
He and Julian had been sitting outside Aiden's parent's house for the past ten minutes while Aiden debated for whether or not he wanted to go inside out of fear of running into his father. Aiden's emotions were still settling and he was still giving Thomas and Kyle the silent treatment ever since they teamed up and removed him from being CEO of Grayson Enterprise.
After calming down and having thought with a clear head, Aiden was no longer stunned anymore by everything that had happened to him. A move like that, Aiden could see his father doing but Kyle, on the other hand, Aiden hadn't expected him to be so ballsy.
He knew that Kyle had always been a kiss ass, a yes man when it came to Thomas and the family business, but Aiden had never thought for a second that Kyle would weasel his way to the top to have him replaced as CEO of a company to a family that he wasn't even blood related to. Thomas' actions stung, but Kyle's stung worse for Aiden because the two not only grew up together, but Kyle was like a brother to Aiden.
And now, overnight, he turned into his enemy.
"Aiden!" Lydia exclaimed after she opened the front door to her home to greet the troubled son that didn't visit her often enough. "My sweet boy, how have you been? I haven't heard anything from you since you were in the hospital." She didn't give him enough time to answer as she playfully hit him on the shoulder.
"Why haven't you called to check in with me? I've been worried sick about you, Aiden."
"I just needed some time to clear my head. I'm sorry. I know I should have called you, but I'm here now. I wanted to see you in person to apologize." Aiden kissed his mother on the cheek as he and Julian entered the house. "Is Thomas around?"
"No," his mother said in a disapproving tone. "He and I aren't speaking at the moment. I am utterly disgusted with him and your brother for what they did. I didn't find out until last night when your father came home and told me everything. I had no idea that he still owned the business. Not only has been lying to you for all these years, but he's been lying to me as well, him and Kyle. I fault myself for being so clueless. I should have been smart enough to see—"
"Stop that. You can't blame yourself for any of this." Aiden hugged his mother as she began to tear up. His abhorrence continued to rise towards his father and brother. Not only had Thomas and Kyle hurt him, but they hurt Lydia as well and that made Aiden angrier than what he already was. "I just want you to know that I love you, and I want to thank you for always having my back even when I don't deserve to have anyone in my corner. You've never let me down, despite me always being a constant troublemaker."
"Troublemaker is an understatement, I'd say." Lydia laughed. "Enough crying, I don't want to talk about your father, Kyle, or their stupid corporation anymore. Come and let me fix you something to eat. I know that you haven't been eating properly on your own."
"Actually, I have." Aiden laughed nervously as he looked over to his ever so quiet bodyguard. "Julian is more than just my bodyguard. He also cooks for me. Can't you see all the weight that I've put on since he's been around?" Aiden lifted his shirt, showing his mother the pathetic little pudge of a stomach he had. His mother waved him off as the three of them headed towards the kitchen.
"What's so funny?"
"He's not feeding you enough! You're still skin and bones, son." His mother laughed, and then looked over to Julian and smiled while Aiden took a seat at the kitchen table. "Thank you for trying, but only mama's cooking can put some meat on this boy's bones."
"Maybe you can teach me a new thing or two then?" Julian pulled up the sleeves on his shirt, and gave Aiden's mother a heartwarming smile, the same smile that made Aiden's own heart flutter. "I don't mind getting my hands dirty."
"Well, aren't you the charmer."
Aiden's mother blushed, and walking over to the refrigerator she grabbed a couple packages of chicken breast from it and handed them to Julian.
"If only we'd met when I was younger and firmer..."
"Ma! Less talking and more cooking, yeah?" Aiden glared at his mother and Julian with a facial expression showing aversion. "No more flirting with my bodyguard. He's happily taken. Right, McAndrew?"
Julian turned red, nodding. Aiden smirked.
"Sorry, Julian." Lydia laughed as she and Julian unpackaged the chicken breast. She gave Julian a cutting board and knife, instructing him to slice it into strips while she grabbed a bunch of spices from the cabinet beside her. "And what about you, son? Are you seeing anyone right now? I mean, you've never brought a girl over here, so I don't know how your love life is going. All the magazines label you a playboy. Is it true?"
"You can't believe everything you read in the magazines, mom." Aiden sighed, knowing where his mother was going with the conversation.
"It's all lies ninety-five percent of the time."
"Whatever, but can I just say that I want grandkids? When are you going to make that happen for me? I'm not getting any younger," Lydia stated. Aiden shifted uncomfortably in his seat. Julian remained quiet, listening attentively to everything that was being said. "When are you going to get you a good girl, settle down, and start a family?"
"I don't know," Aiden replied, eyeing Julian's back as he thought about the future that he could have with him, instead of the one his mother so desperately wanted. "That fairy tale junk just isn't really for me. It may never happen."
His mother sighed and then turned her attention to Julian. "What about you, Julian? Do you and your girlfriend have any kids? I don't see a ring on your finger. Are you two not married?"
"I'm not married, Mrs. Grayson." Julian chuckled. "And I don't have any kids. Probably won't ever have any, if I'm being honest."
"Why? You don't like kids?" Lydia asked.
"It's not that, it's just...well, I'm gay," Julian confessed, and he could feel Aiden's eyes on his back as he watched Lydia's facial expression. "I don't have a girlfriend, rather, a boyfriend."
"Gays can have kids too, Julian." Lydia smiled. Aiden relaxed in his seat. "Ever head of surrogacy? With your genes, I bet you'd have some beautiful, brown eyed children."
"I wish my mother was more like you," Julian whispered. "She doesn't understand me, or accept me. Religion clouds her judgment. What the bible says goes, basically."
"You poor baby," Lydia said sympathetically. "I hear so much pain in your voice, I can only imagine the horrors you had to experience growing up. If you were mine, I'd have accepted you with open arms. Who gives a shit about who you fall in love? As long as my children are happy, I'm happy."
"Really?" Aiden finally spoke up.
"You'd accept me if I were...like Julian?"
"Of course." Lydia, a little perplexed, looked back at Aiden as if he should already know the answer. "What'd you think I do? Turn you away? You're my child. I'd never do something like that to you, I don't care who you choose to love. Now, Thomas, on the other hand, I can't speak for him. We were raised differently. You know how your father is."
"All too well." Aiden sunk down in his seat, ultimately deciding to keep his secret just that – a secret, for now.
